The Power of Claiming Face
In August Maya did a CLAIMING FACE Educator Training through the Arts Council for Monterey County. The participants were bursting with creative energy and passion. After the class, we received this wonderful quote from one of the participants that reminded us why we do this work.

It was just a wonderful experience for me as a mother, artist and teacher.
So many important points were discussed regarding children’s self esteem and feeling like they belong in our world and to participate in our society. I’ve always taught with the underlying intention for children to recognize their place in our world and to feel great about themselves on all levels.
Maya has developed a great program that Continue reading »
Maya Gonzalez creates art for ALA Día poster
In celebration of the 15th anniversary of El día de los Niños/El día de los Libros, Maya created the artwork for the event poster. “ALSC is very proud to have Maya Christina Gonzalez produce the vibrant artwork for the 15th anniversary of El día de los niños/El día de los libros,” said Julie Corsaro, ALSC president. “We believe that her beautiful poster thoroughly reflects this joyous celebration of family literacy.”
Maya says, “When I was asked to do the ALA poster for El Dia, I portrayed a grandmother sharing a special moment with many important aspects of life that support and sustain us. These include reading, nature and community with children from many different cultural backgrounds to reflect all the different ways we are.”
Read more about the 15th anniversary on the ALA website. You can also read more from Maya on Pat Mora’s blog or order your poster or bookmark from the ALA store.

CAEA Conference in San Jose this weekend
The CSLA/CLA conference last weekend in Sacramento was a blast, and now we’re off to San Jose this weekend for the 2010 California Arts Education Association conference. Maya will be presenting an Intro to Claiming Face workshop on Friday, Nov. 19th from 12:30-1:45pm. The conference will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel in San Jose from Nov. 18th-21st. More details about the conference on their website.
Plus earlier in the day on Friday Maya will be working with a group of student teachers at California State University Monterey Bay with her colleague and friend, Dr. Miguel Lopez. One of the goals of the sessions with these students is to present a case study in relation to Claiming Face and what it can accomplish in personal lives as well as in the classroom. Along with creativity and reflection, students will have the rare opportunity of practicing presence with Maya. One of the three main tenets of Claiming Face. We hope to share more about the outcome of this case study as a great way to continue to articulate the powerful work of Claiming Face.

Cool Gear to Empower
So one day we were thinking, wouldn’t it be great if we had t-shirts to wear at conferences or events and to have stickers available with our motto or The 3 Rules. And then we thought, maybe others might also enjoy such fun things. And thus our CafePress store was born. We’ve been busy playing and having fun designing cool graphics for t-shirts, stickers, and more. You can check out some of our offerings in our store including our Claiming Face journal where you can claim your self and your life on every page and remember that YOU are an Artist! A great compliment to our Claiming Face Ed Guide. More designs sure to come too including art from some of Maya’s children’s books! Enjoy!
Tales from “Our Community, Ourselves” Diversity Conference
Spring is here and we’ve been all over the place. I’m one of those terribly homey people. I LOVE home. But I also LOVE to travel. India, Mexico, Brazil, Puerto Rico, New York, Philadelphia, South Carolina, Vallejo, Alameda County… The world fascinates me with its beauty and variation, from the far away and vastly different to the close to home and still different! In San Francisco, we live in what I jokingly refer to as an “adjacent reality,” similar to the rest of the country, but noticeably unique. Ahhh, San Francisco, she’s an island unto herself in some ways. So even when we only travel a county or two away, I feel like we’re on an adventure…away from our familiar little village of the Castro and Mission Districts, away from the public trains and rolling fog, our local markets and favorite strolls.
This last Friday, April 23rd, we were up before the sun and off to the Newark Hilton for the Diversity Conference sponsored by Child, Family and Community Services, Inc. of Alameda County. I love doing these things with Matthew. He drives and I navigate. Usually I’ve been alone, so I drive and I have no idea who’s navigating. We got there nice and early and set up our table. It was the first public event for Claiming Face, the Educator’s Guide, and Continue reading »
