Our Introduction

Us in Mexico Hi! We’re Maya and Matthew Smith-Gonzalez and we’re the visionaries behind Reflection Press. While we could say all the stuff about how many books Maya has illustrated or the awards she’s won, or who Matthew is and what he does, we’ll save that for the About Us page on our website and get to that with our second phase website launch. For this post we’ll just stick to some fun facts.

We live in San Francisco in the Castro neighborhood and most nights we watch the fog dragon creep over from the coast like a cool blanket over our city. We love nature and the outdoors and enjoy camping, backpacking and biking with our daughter, Zai. Maya is usually always making something, a costume for the next holiday (yes, every holiday can have a costume), a necklace, a wheat-free pie, you name it – she loves creating with her hands and doing things she doesn’t know how to do. We hope to share some of her creations here on our blog. Matthew likes puzzles and figuring out new and alternative ways to do or look at things especially when it comes to building stuff. Ever since he was a baby in his play pen he’s been content with a good puzzle, and these days he puts that to good use figuring out the latest puzzles – website design, accounting, building a table or what have you….

Our family at Angel Island Some of our favorite places to travel to are Mexico, the Yuba River, and Tahoe, although we pretty much enjoy ourselves wherever we go. We like movies about super heroes, music that we can dance to, and thought-provoking books that inspire us. And, speaking of heroes, we really try hard every day to embody Mahatma Gandhi’s saying, “be the change you want to see in the world.”
